Cult Information and Family Support is pleased to announce an evening seminar to be held in Newtown, Sydney: "What helps clients recover from
abusive, controlling groups and relationships?"
The focus for this evening seminar will be the training of health professionals and counsellors. Many ex-members report that they have searched desperately for a mental health professional who understands the kind of manipulation and deception they have endured, so we believe that this seminar will be another valuable step towards training professionals here in Australia.
We are very happy to have Gillie Jenkinson presenting this evening seminar. Gillie Jenkinson is an experienced gestalt psychotherapist working with people recovering from abuse, trauma and self harm, and has contributed to publications on 'Theraputic Writing', 'Pathological Spirituality' and 'Cult Pseudo-Personality', and is a supervisor for therapists in rape and crisis counselling.
Based at Hope Valley Counselling in England, Gillie Jenkinson has led teaching seminars in London and the USA and has had an internship at the renowned Wellspring Retreat and Rehabilitation Centre in Ohio.
In this talk Ms. Jenkinson will discuss the clinical issues faced by cult leavers with an emphasis on pseudo-personality. Ms. Jenkinson will explore how cult pseudo-personality forms and look at the theory of doubling, false self, adaptation and dissociation in order to ascertain the answer. She will give a brief overview of the harm that can be caused by cults and share her MA research which raised the question:
What helps clients recover from
abusive, controlling groups and relationships?
She will end with an overview of some of the new research in psychotherapy and neuroscience and creatively apply this to what might happen in the brain when subjected to thought reform. There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion.
The speaker would very much enjoy talking and networking with Australian clinical therapists after the talk. Although the talk will be aimed at professional therapists, ex-members of cult-like groups and their family may find the topics interesting and helpful and are welcome to register.
You will be able to recommend this seminar to all health professionals, counsellors, students and support groups throughout Australia. Past participants know from personal experience that we will aim to make the experience truly exciting and inclusive.
