A former top Church of Scientology official has revealed in a new documentary that he ordered Nicole Kidman's phones be wiretapped at the suggestion of her own husband at the time, Tom Cruise.

Kidman and Cruise split in 2001 after a decade of marriage.

The church allegedly regarded Kidman with suspicion because her father was a psychologist — a profession frowned upon by the church — and because the relationship appeared to keep Cruise from embracing the church wholeheartedly, according to claims by Mark "Marty" Rathbun in Going Clear: Scientology & The Prison Of Belief.

Rathbun, a church member for 20 years and a key aide to church head David Miscavige, claims that during the filming of Eyes Wide Shut in the late 1990s, Cruise was worried about Kidman and suggested her phones be tapped.

Rathbun said Miscavige ordered Rathbun to organise the wiretap but it is not clear what information, if any, was uncovered by the process.

The documentary, directed by Oscar winner Alex Gibney, recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.

Rathbun left the church in 2004.
