Scientology:
Senate rejects inquiry on Scientology

SOUTH Australian independent senator Nick Xenophon will keep pressing for an inquiry into the Church of Scientology, despite the major political parties joining to defeat his second attempt to refer allegations of abuse to a Senate committee.

Senator Xenophon's motion called for a wide-ranging inquiry into allegations of abuse against Church of Scientology employees, volunteers and followers, including claims of coerced abortions, deceptive conduct in fund-raising activities and harassment of followers and ex-followers.

But the senator's latest move failed when only the five Greens senators supported his motion.

The government's Senate leader, Chris Evans, said the role of Senate committees was to inquire into public policy and government administration, not the activities of individual organisations.

Senator Xenophon told the Senate: "If this motion goes down I will come back in the next sitting week with another motion. If that goes down I will come back with another and another."

A Church of Scientology statement said the allegations were "rumour and outright lies".
