Law Reform:
NEW LAWS NEEDED FOR CULTS
Senator Sue Boyce - Senator for Queensland
Media Release
November 1 2011

Conference Report and Video | Parliamentary Speech

Australia needs new laws to protect Australians from the immense emotional, psychological and financial harm caused by the activities of certain cult organisations said Queensland Liberal Senator Sue Boyce today in opening the "Cult Conference: Facing the Realities" being held today at Parliament House.

"Once upon a time domestic violence was regarded as 'private' business but now we realise it is everybody's business and a community responsibility to prevent. We are now at a point where the psychological and emotional abuse perpetrated by some cults needs urgent legal, political and community attention," Senator Boyce said.

give these people some justice

With up to 500,000 Australians having some contact with cult groups either as members or by being families and friends of members, the behaviour of some cults needs urgent attention.

Senator Sue said: "There are victims of cult abuse across the nation. People who have been abused, manipulated and subject to extreme psychological and emotional violence by groups who seek power, control and in some cases financial advantage by taking calculated advantage of those who have become members.

"Two years ago I wrote to the Commonwealth Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, asking him to refer the issue to the Law Reform Commission for examination.

He replied saying that the Law Reform Commission was too busy.

"I renew my appeal to the Attorney-General on behalf of the tens of thousands of Australian whose lives have been wrecked by the predatory behaviour of a number of cult groups to find a way to give these people some justice."
